PMA was commissioned to design and manage a contemporary redevelopment of an existing building which directly overlooks Woolacombe Beach.
That needed to accommodate a new restaurant / cafe, a smaller informal cafe with rooftop terraces, a takeway, ice cream parlour, 4 shops and refurbished public toilets. At the same time a key requirement of the brief was to improve beach access for all, so a ramped approach, a lift and wider concourse were proposed.
Our design achieved a significant increase in floorspace over the existing facilities but by careful design consideration and using more sensitive and subtle external materials (and low maintenance), we were able to develop a design solution which achieved full planning approval under delegated powers with the support of the parish council and local community.
The project started on site in winter of 2024 and is due to complete in spring 2026.
