Firebeacon Lane

Sometimes the humblest of rural structures can provide the basis for a truly stunning home. In this case, the building was a former piggery, consisting of a single rectangular box with a shallow duo-pitched roof. The design transforms this simple form into a stylish and functional home through a series of considered architectural interventions.

The open bay on the west side was retained as an entrance courtyard, providing a visual buffer between the dwelling and the surrounding landscape, while creating a sheltered external space adjoining the entrance. Key living spaces were positioned along the southern elevation, with sliding glass doors maximising views and daylight. The main living area is partially divided by a sunken floor, creating a cosy seating area around a TV and log burner, while a separate snug opens onto the courtyard garden.

Bedrooms are arranged along the east end of the building, with service areas along the north side. This layout minimises window openings on the north elevation, which is the only side visible from a nearby road, maintaining privacy and a simple external appearance.

Externally, the building is finished with a restrained palette of materials, including vertical timber cladding and a standing seam metal roof, enhancing the clean lines and understated character of the home.
