Abscott Farm, Shirwell

PMA was commissioned to undertake the demolition of an existing, dated farmhouse and replace with a new dwelling to meet contemporary performance requirements.

The building arrangement is inspired by a typical farm courtyard where a series of buildings is arranged around a central outdoor space.

The house is approached via an entrance courtyard, framed by living, sleeping and service wings. The building is all on one level and used traditional external materials to relate to the rural setting.

These ideas meant we were able to achieve planning consent for a house which was 3 times larger than the original dwelling and some 200m further west facing better views of the countryside.

The resulting house has excellent thermal performance and the design includes solar shading as well as acting as a wind barrier, a considered part of the design given the high position of the house above the surrounding field.

The design has a comfortable contemporary feel and the layout allows the family’s future needs.
