This project transforms a traditional pole barn into a contemporary family home, carefully balancing modern living with the building’s original character. The linear form of the barn required thoughtful planning to avoid long corridors, resulting in a series of well-connected spaces that feel both generous and inviting. With a total gross internal area of 200 square metres, the conversion makes efficient use of the existing footprint while celebrating the scale and proportions of the original structure.

The eastern end of the barn has been adapted into a two-storey sleeping wing, housing five bedrooms, including two with en suite bathrooms. This arrangement creates a private retreat, ideal for family life while also providing welcoming space for guests.
At the centre, a double-height stairwell forms a dramatic focal point, flooding the interior with natural light and linking the sleeping and living areas.
The western wing accommodates open-plan living, with a kitchen, dining, and sitting area flowing seamlessly together. A spacious snug can be separated with a sliding barn door, creating an intimate space while preserving the openness of the barn’s original volume.
Vaulted ceilings throughout the living spaces enhance the sense of scale, highlighting the architectural character of the converted barn. The result is a home that is at once expansive, practical, and deeply respectful of its agricultural origins.
