Goodleigh, North Devon

2no. new dwellings within the village development boundary of Goodleigh.

Goodleigh is a small linear village located approximately 2.5 miles NE from the town of Barnstaple. Comprising of residential properties, a church, primary school and Public House, this is a popular village and is within easy commuting distance into Barnstaple. The village itself benefits from being in an elevated position above Coney Gut River with views of the valley and rolling Devon hills beyond.

The site sits on the edge of the conservation area at the centre of the village. The aim was to make the most of the spectacular views from the site and create two modern houses that respond positively to the character of the local area. An ‘reverse’ living ethos was employed with all the living accommodation located on the first floor spilling out onto a large terrace overlooking the valley to the South. The design approach was contemporary but using traditional materials to respect the conservation area and IFC construction was used to accelerate the construction period and to provide two highly thermally efficient buildings close to Passivhaus Standards.
