After successful engagement with Plymouth City Council to produce the approved Design Code for the Main Square, PMA secured the tender to design the 2no. proposed new buildings within this focal area.
Working with Persimmon to design the 2no. new buildings, these comprised of the following:
Building 1 – 500m2 health care + residential apartments above (over 3 floors)
Building 2 – 400m2 commercial space + residential apartments above (over 3 floors)
Total of 30 no. 1 and 2 bedroom apartments split between the two buildings
Through the previous work undertaken to develop the approved Design Code, an exercise in the detailed exploration of the physical context of the site had already taken place which established the key design parameters for the area. As a result of this, inspiration was taken from the retained landscape features of the quarry cliffs to the east and west and re-imagined in the form of a jagged striated facade treatment to give a dramatic yet functional series of balconies to all apartments.
The concept design proposals produced in 2022 were well received by PCC. These are now being developed into a viable scheme which will receive planning approval and which will be a high quality addition and a focal point for the development at Saltram Meadows.
