The Royal George

The Royal George is a 2 storey Public House on the South bank of the confluence between the River Torridge and River Taw at Appledore. The Building is Grade II listed and lies within the Conservation Area for Appledore. According to the listing details, the building dates mainly from the early 19th century.

Whilst the building is in a wonderful position overlooking the estuary, it had unfortunately run into a poor state of disrepair and was no longer trading when our clients purchased the property in 2015.

Our brief was to make the most of the site and the building, balancing opening up the floor plan and facades with sensitively restoring the listed structure and keeping the feel of the building suitable for the conservation area setting.

By working with the local conservation officer, we have been able to strip the building back to the original structure, removing the latter additions and open up the elevation to connect with the seaward views.

By modifying the internal layout we were also able to include 3 new lettable rooms at first floor and new owners accommodation within the roof space incorporating a recessed balcony over looking the water.
