Replacement dwelling in area of AONB
Sunnybank has been in the family of the client for 62 years, since 1953. In that time the clients family have used the house both as a holiday home and a permanent dwelling, extending the original building in the 1950’s to accommodate the need of the family at that time.
The existing building is a chalet bungalow and has come to the end of its usable life, so a sensitively scaled replacement dwelling was required by the client.
The site is a gently sloping, with far reaching views over the Georgham and Croyde countryside as such a connection to the view was key to any design proposal.
Due to the location being in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) it was important to develop a building form that picked up on the rural & coastal vernacular, and pallette of materials which has lead to a modern interpretation of the chalet form.
We developed a split level solution over two building forms, one for living and one for sleeping linked by a service zone. This has enabled the building to have an increased living space for the client, without being more prominent on the street scape.
