Gorwell House, Barnstaple

Sensitive refurbishment & extension to Grade II Listed house

Lower Gorwell House has been the family home of our clients since 1976. In that time Dr & Mrs Marston have painstakingly restored much of the extensive gardens, which along with music and art, are their respective passions. Dr and Mrs Marston are now embarking on a new chapter in their relationship with the house and setting by moving into Upper Gorwell House.

Their aim is firstly to refurbish and extend that property to better suit their needs and secondly, to restore and reinstate the existing outbuildings at the top of the walled garden to form ancillary space. The design proposals have been developed to preserve and enhance the existing landscape and listed building and to ensure that the new elements remain subservient to the main house.

A fundamental part of the design concept is to enable the house to relate better to the gardens. Because of the change in ground level, the only way this can really be achieved is to reorganise the dwelling to extend the existing reverse level accommodation, with the principle living spaces being on the upper floor.
