Fitness Studio & New Roof to Sports Hall, Petroc

Enhanced sports facilities on existing campus

Finding space within a building or a campus where there appears to be none is a key skill that we offer as Architects.

In this case a fitness studio was required to supplement the gym at Petroc’s main site but the proximity of adjacent buildings and routes through the site meant there was little space to extend the building. We quickly identified that the most cost effective solution would be to build a second storey over the existing gym on the south side of the Sports Hall.

A new steel framed structure was designed which meant that minimal excavation was required thus reducing the build time.
The  external walls and roof of the extension were wrapped  in profiled composite cladding. This was pre-finished  which helped reduce time on site further. The new fitness studio has good levels of natural light thanks to large windows in each end and a series of rooflights. These also provide natural ventilation to provide a more comfortable environment for the activities  taking place within the space.

As well as the extension a new curved roof was built over the Sports Hall to replace the original flat roof which had reached the end of it’s life. The savings created by the design strategy meant that there was enough left in the project budget to create a new covered entrance to the building and improve it’s presence on the campus.
