Creating more space in an office building
Having gone through many different uses through its life, No. 11 The Strand, Barnstaple has reached a point where investment is needed to bring up to the standards expected of modern office accommodation. As part of this we came up with a design solution to improve the circulation and create more useable, space. One important part of this was to cover over the exiting rear courtyard at the rear to enable this area to become the main circulation space on the ground floor and at the same time double as flexible, informal meeting space.
Along with that improvement, we managed to find extra space by converting the second floor loft into useable office space. All existing roof trusses were retained with a new well-insulated ceiling installed following the underside of the roof. An array of conservation style rooflights were installed in the roof to flood the interior with natural light and transform the space from a dark dingy attic to a great place to work.
